You know you’re old when…
December 13, 2024With David Johnson retiring from WPXI in a matter of hours, you realize you’re “getting up there” when you think about his beginnings as the evening anchor. Remember when “Mike and Edye were on this bus”… and on your cars?!
When Johnson started anchoring the evening newscast in 1989, Mike Hambrick returned to Baltimore’s Channel 11, WBAL. Edye Tarbox would leave the station soon after which left space for Peggy Finnegan. Tarbox eventually showed up on Fox News where she went by E. D. Hill.
Bumper sticker is from the Bill Burr Collection. A native Pittsburgher, Mr. Burr is now a news anchor in South Carolina. He recently shared a plethora of tactile Pittsburgh Radio and TV historical material. More to come!
Ah, Edye Tarbox. “Groucho Marx took a turn for the worse…”
Right station, but much earlier than that. That was back in the WIIC days with the much-maligned Beverly Byer who screwed up rather frequently I understand.
No, no. That was Beverly Byer who coined that memorable phrase. But, Edye was no bargain. My husband Ron and I were doing commercials for WPXI that time and thought the last names of those anchors were hysterically funny — Tarbox and Hambrick!
Lots of people on Mt. Washington remember Edye running through their yards and causing a scene after her car was towed. I imagine she wound-up on the bus.
