WTAE wins Murrow Award

WTAE (4) has won a regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award for the best “Investigative Reporting” category. The investigative team spent months examining 46 child abuse deaths in Pennsylvania. During that time, Investigative Reporter, Paul Van Osdol, uncovered that time and time again, child welfare agencies had warning signs just days and weeks before children died. Van Osdol took those issues straight to child welfare agencies, local leaders and Pennsylvania’s Human Services Secretary.

“These children were tragically silenced, and their stories deserved to be heard. It is our duty as broadcasters to expose the issues to the very people who can spearhead changes in policies,” said WTAE President & General Manager Charles W. Wolfertz III. “We humbly accept this award in the victims’ honor.”

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow’s pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name.
