WTAE affected by DirecTv-Disney spat
September 4, 2024If you subscribe to DirecTv – most specifically to their service received via online stream – chances are you aren’t receiving WTAE-TV (4 Pittsburgh). This is due to a spat, but not between Hearst Broadcasting (who owns WTAE) and DirecTv, but between Disney (who owns ABC) and DirecTv.
The issue remains the same as always – a dispute about retransmission fees for networks under the ABC umbrella including their main network as well as ESPN and The Disney Channel. That includes all local ABC affiliates, like WTAE, whether they are owned by Disney/ABC or not.
This outage is reportedly not affecting DirecTv customers who receive their signal via a satellite dish and Disney/ABC properties as well as ABC affiliates should appear as normal.

Gotta love the Mouse… Why am I not surprised?
Didn’t Sinclair go through something similar recently with their CW affiliates (prior to WPNT picking up the affiliation) because Nexstar was having a similar dispute? And cable companies wonder why cord cutting is on the rise.
Of course, talk about the irony here seeing that Nexstar owns or controls all but one ABC affiliate adjacent to Pittsburgh. (WYTV, WJET, WTRF-DT3, WBOY-DT2) The one that isn’t? Sinclair-controlled WATM. So yeah, they’re in this current spat too.
