WDIG gets new life
December 4, 2018Those tuning into WDIG (950 Steubenville) will notice an oldies format starting the day after Christmas. Until that time, Christmas music will be on the air. New owners Bob & Kim Scharnhorst returned to the area to buy the station from Greater Zion Temple Family Worship Center who have had the station for sale for a couple of years.
Mr. Scharnhorst is no stranger to the area and worked for KQV as an engineer at one point. He has secured another familiar set of calls for 950 – WIXZ – which used to be on McKeesport’s 1360. There will be a live morning show hosted by Bob Christy, but the bulk of the day will be a satellite feed with local spot drops.
WDIG’s signal flows southwest towards Wheeling to stay away from WBGG’s signal at 970 which is situated in Ross Township. However, parts of the South Hills can pick up 950.
In the era of digital tuners one might get 950 clearer than one may think in the Pittsburgh area. 950 is empty east of the city with the demise of WNCC and I’ve found on a digital car radio that I can get a 101.3 from Johnstown in between 101.1 from Homer City and 101.5-WORD almost to Apollo on the way west from Indiana.
I believe that the towers are across the river near Wierton,WV, or close thereabouts. The station can be heard quite clearly in south west parts of Beaver County, like MIdland. Great to hear the news of a new buyer breathing life into the station.
How is a satellite feed of canned oldies programming “new life?”
Caught it today during it\’s maiden voyage. Music sounded good. As one who put 5 years of blood, sweat and tears into it beginning in 1977, I am glad to hear that the station is coming back to life.
I wish Bob and Kim all the luck in the world. The first thing to do is, hire a few good sales-people.
Hire some magicians. That’s what it will take to get people to throw money away trying to reach customers with commercials on a small, low-powered AM station airing canned oldies programming.
They should apply to move to 1340 1kw fulltime.
