WAMO changing around
October 16, 2020Radio Insight reports this morning that “WAMO-100” will move from WBZZ-HD3 (100.7 New Kensington) and translator W261AX (100.1) back to WAMO (660 Wilkinsburg) and the newer translator W297BU (107.3 Wilkinsburg) on November 2. WAMO owners Radio Power Inc. moved their original hip hop format to Star’s HD3 channel when they brought “The Beat” on the air in 2019 for the official debut of 107.3 which had also been translating 660s signal.
The move begs the question, “What’s going to happen to 100.1?” As a hot commodity FM translator, is Radio Power selling it to another small AM in the area? Could Entercom be using it for their other 100.7 HD channel with the classic B-94 programming? ***UPDATE: Just minutes after posting, we learned that the signal has been sold, but to whom and for what remain a mystery. But we understand it may not even be a local sale.
W261AX’s signal was initially at the KDKA-TV site in Perry Hilltop but was moved to Hays (near where WKST-FM (96.1) and WPGP (1250) are) in order to cover more of the audience WAMO sought.
That’s too bad, I thought the two stations covered the Urban format well, with old and new. The Beat, with oldies was unique, in a time when current hip-hop can be heard across many outlets.
That tower is owned by WAMO, off Britton Road WZUM and 107.3 are also lovated their.
Maybe 100.1 was sold to Wilkins (WWNL 1080 Local ) they have a CP for 103.9 with 8 watts only getting out about 5 Miles serving North Hills. And Blocking WKHB. In March W261AX aka WAMO 100 Wanted to Move to a Different Radio Tower (reg # 1225839) but was Denied by the FCC.
