Twilight Broadcasting Sells Last Property
November 27, 2023A York County-based broadcast company that once had holdings in western Pennsylvania has sold its last broadcast property.
According to WFMZ-TV, news/talk formatted WEEU has been sold to Treese Media Group, based in Montgomery County. WEEU was the last broadcast property owned by Twilight Broadcasting, which acquired it in 2019.
WEEU was co-owned with local newspaper The Reading Eagle for many years. After the paper filed for bankruptcy and was subsequently sold to a new owner, the station’s fate was uncertain, as MediaNews Group had no interest in acquiring it. Twilight Broadcasting owner Bob Lowe purchased the station for $88,500 on July 1, 2019, less than 30 days before it was due to go dark.
WEEU is a standalone AM that operates at 20,000 watts day, 6,000 watts night and uses a six-tower directional antenna system. It does not have an FM translator.
No purchase price was disclosed. Lowe, who holds other business interests, said in the report that he no longer had the time to operate the station. He first announced his intent to sell WEEU in March of this year.
Twilight’s western Pennsylvania holdings had been in Oil City (WKQW-AM/FM), Philipsburg (WPHB), and Smethport (WXMT).
Probably not much need for the AM station maintaining a six tower array as evidenced that it was once dark for nearly a year. Times change.
