August 24, 2019WBVP introduces FM translator
John from Leetsdale checked in the other day to report that the WBVP (1230 Beaver Falls)/WMBA (1460 Ambridge) simulcast can now be heard on W257BA (99.3 Beaver Falls). This FM translator is attached exclusively to WBVP and WMBA will soon have one at 95.7. (See the complete list of area FM translators here.) In case you wondered about the official rules of FM translators, bore yourself here.
The landscape in Ross looks empty
With “Tower 1” the only one of 5 to remain on the Ross Township property where KQV was shipped out for 70 years, the hill above North Hills Village looks empty. I haven’t had the chance to snap a picture, but ole “1” looks lonely up there without the rest of the array. What Vertical Bridge will use it for remains a mystery, but they own all types of communications towers throughout the country. So it could be just about anything!
Little did I know that when I took the picture of the site for the masthead of this website, that it would become history two years later! I think it’s worthy of staying there for some time to come!
Things to do
Since I am doing most radio “remotely” and from my office closer to home, I’m granting myself more time to work on PBRTV. I feel in some ways that I have let my readership down at times over the past few years, but I assure you that my interest in this site and the business have never once waned!
You’ve probably noticed more posts lately. That is thanks, in part, to a plethora of stories lately. But it’s also due in large part to having just a little more time and energy to focus on this nearly 21 year project – one that is a labor of love.
What can you do?
Remember a few years ago when I asked for old photos of studios, personalities, old time local radio events caught on film, etc.? Well, I would love to help you share them online via your own page on the site! Your pictures won’t be hidden by the daily posts of social media and will be easy to bookmark for easy return access!
So clean your scanning bed and get those items scanned. Email them to me via info@pbrtv.com! (By the way, if, after about 7 years you still have an AOL address for this site, please get rid of it. It’s full of spam and other junk so I’ll never see it!) See the Photo Gallery info here. Click on a “collection” page in case you need some inspiration!
More podcasts coming
We’ve made contact with several local radio and TV folk about doing a PBRTV Podcast episode with us! Now we just have to schedule it! Stay tuned!
We’re moving right along and appreciate you being along for the ride!
Glad that the translator information was useful. From the FCC record it appears that the 99.3 signal is directed mostly west / northwest and south/east, while the 95.7 is basically due north.
Too bad that no one took pictures/videos as the KQV towers were coming down. That would have been something to see. Also, I have not seen any mention of the dismantling of the KQV site in the Post Gazette. I wonder if the Vertical Bridge company has any photos or videos to share.
Bill, only before and after pics exist. VB seemed to take them down when nobody was looking. Neighbors nearby said it didn’t make much noise. I’m betting that those of us who care about the situation are relatively few.
Actually Eric, there are a few more of us “old timer” former engineers and radio guys from in and around “The ‘Burg” who have just seen your posts on KQV’s transmitter site dismantling who DO care, and, with a tear in our eye, really APPRECIATE your efforts on posting this. It IS truly the end of a broadcasting era in Pittsburgh. Wish more people cared as we do. Just SO SAD! Jay Edwards
