Smith to retire after 38 years
May 10, 2021After news last week of Paul Martino’s retirement from KDKA-TV (2), some speculated that Stacy Smith would soon follow. PBRTV has received word from a passing bird this morning that Smith will retire from KDKA this month after 38 years with the station; albeit 50 years in broadcasting. Smith has covered numerous well-known stories including the recent Tree of Life Synagogue Shootings and became quick to adapt to a work from home environment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Smith was also the first anchor at WQED-TV’s (13) “On-Q” Magazine which was produced in the early 2000s. He eventually gave it up and the program eventually went off the air. He has spent time with several community activities including being a founding member and chair of the Pittsburgh Creche Endowment Committee.
Prior to KDKA, Smith worked at WDAF in Kansas City, but had stops before that in Louisville, Kentucky; Indianapolis, and Muncie, Indiana.
It does seem like KDKA-TV (and really the whole local news industry in general) is pushing older reporters and anchors out for younger, cheaper ones. That being said, I did read that unlike other recent “retirements” Stacy’s is legitimate. Always a pro’s pro doing the news, and literally one of the few people left who can say they’ve survived polio. (Which doesn’t seem to get mentioned in his retirement’s coverage, but who else alive can say they’ve had polio at this point?) Best wishes to retirement.
I assume Ken Rice will be picking up some of his anchoring duties then?
