Shumway celebrates 35 years at KDKA-TV
October 31, 2023Halloween morning was full of celebration. The morning news crew wasn’t just celebrating Halloween though. They also celebrated anchor/reporter John Shumway who has been with the station for 35 years.
It is no secret that KDKA has a pretty good track record for retaining employees. For instance, sports anchor Bob Pompeani recently celebrated his 41st anniversary with the station.
Mr. Shumway, unlike Pompeani, is not a native of the Pittsburgh area. Rather, he hails from Kentucky where he went to school and began his career starting on radio. He came to Pittsburgh with his wife Sonya expecting to stay just a few years. But it seems those plans were changed!
Shumway went viral in 2019 when the Pittsburgh area experienced large population of “17-Year Cicadas”. At the end of a taped piece the video went to a live shot of Shumway who concluded the report by demonstration of the fact that the bugs were edible! “Tastes like asparagus,” he quipped.
Pan fried cicadas are considered a delicacy in parts of southern Ohio (and, I presume, in nearby areas of Kentucky).
