Remembering Tony Mowad
January 6, 2021WZUM (1550 Braddock/88.1 Bethany/101.1 W266CV Pittsburgh) reports tonight that legendary Pittsburgh broadcaster Tony Mowad has died. Mr. Mowad was 85. He got started in radio at WDUQ as a student at Duquesne University in the 1950s long before the jazz format.
He would move on to several local stations including WAZZ, WTAE, WKPA, WYDD, WAMO and back to WDUQ. Mr. Mowad’s deep voice was frequently heard on commercials and even in theatre both locally and elsewhere.
When WDUQ was sold in 2011 he joined the team at Pittsburgh Jazz Channel who kept the former DUQ jazz format alive at first online and then on 1550, 88.1 and 101.1. WZUM will remember Tony in the days and weeks ahead.
Mowad was preceded in death by his wife, Liz, by a little over two weeks – December 20, 2020.
I have fond memories of having worked at WYDD/WKPA in the late 60’s when Tony was there. Great Dj and jazz authority. I was the chief engineer then for the stations.
