Remembering Stan
June 12, 2023Perhaps the only Cleveland native who could get away with reporting and commenting on sports in Pittsburgh, Stan Savran was considered a gentleman in the biz. Savran died Monday after a lengthy cancer battle. He was 76.
Since 1976, Savran graced the Pittsburgh airwaves via WWSW/WTKN (970); KQV (1410); WTAE-AM (1250); WTAE-TV (4); KBL Sports Network – Fox Sports – Root Sports – AT&T Sportsnet where he was teamed up with Guy Junker; and most recently WBGG (970). John Poister, who worked with Savran at WTAE, said in a social media post, “He loved radio sports talk shows–and with his total recall of virtually everything in sports he was the ideal host.”
Savran announced his latest health issue – a foot amputation – via a social media post in April, a little over a year after he announced a lung cancer diagnosis. Although absent from his own show of late, he continued to make appearances on sister station WDVE (102.5) as recently as last month.

A hero in Pittsburgh sports. It\’s a sad day to hear of the passing. A great guy who loved the people he worked with and the sports world. Rest In Peace, Stan.
Very sad news. Stan was truly a class act and I always enjoyed listening to him, going back to the day he replaced Greg Benedetti. Condolences to his family.
Memo to the management at WBGG: Letting your automation continue to run promos for Savran on Sports weekdays Noon to 2 at this point is really bad form.
