Regulators reconsider area code change

The state’s Public Utility Commission voted to review the recent decision to assign the new 582 area code to a 9-county region in the Northwest part of the state. The new code was to take effect on February 1, 2012 shrinking the 814 area code.
Now, after receiving more than forty petitions against the split, commissioners will hold more public hearings on the matter. Opponents of the plan prefer the “overlay” system in which current numbers would remain the same and new numbers would be assigned 582.
