Post-Gazette to reduce print editions
June 27, 2018The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has made news of its own lately with the rejection of many consecutive drawings and eventual firing of long-time political cartoonist Rob Rogers last week. Now the paper will become the latest to reduce its print editions to 5 days a week.
In a letter dated June 26 from Senior HR Manager, Linda Guest to Mike Fuoco, President of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, she states,
Management at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has been exploring for some time how we can continue to provide the best quality journalism to our readers and subscribers in the future. We have decided that becoming a digital news organization is or future.
Guest went on to explain last fall’s introduction of “PG NewsSlide”, an app for tablets and phones and how the website and social media already have a strong presence.
Beginning August 25, 2018, we will eliminate two (2) days of our print operations. As we transition to a digital newspaper, the nature of our operations will change substantially. We are prepared to discuss the effects of our decision will have on your bargaining unit.
No word yet on what days of the week print will initially be eliminated.
The paper has been getting thinner and thinner as the weeks go by. Hope that they’ll at least continue the Sunday edition (for the coupons and ads). Maybe they’ll go back to a once a week listing of all the tv programs. I’m not thrilled with not knowing in advance what programs are on when. The daily tv listings are a pain.
Not shocking, but another nail in the use of newsprint to inform the public. In the day the Sunday newspaper was the largest most entertaining of the week- and now it won’t even exist in physical form. Say what you want-this isn’t really progress, is it?
