LaBrozzi retiring
February 7, 2024Two days after KDKA-FM (93.7) host Ron Cook announced his retirement, KDKA-AM (1020, 100.1 W261AX) “Brand Manager” Dave LaBrozzi has announced an April retirement. Before he was at the Big K, LaBrozzi was a programming guru at stations like WABC and WPLJ in New York City, the Infinity/CBS/Entercom stations in Baltimore, and a regional VP of Programming at Clear Channel serving this region – Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and Johnstown. He also had stops in Texas and Tennessee.
One can’t help but wonder if this is a symptom of Audacy’s financial woes seeing that this is the second retirement at the Pittsburgh office this week. Either way, it appears LaBrozzi is accepting things with grace. He said, “The time has come for me to walk away, and I do so with the deepest appreciation. “If I worked with you, I hope you can say that I gave you my best and that I helped you succeed. I know my life was richer because of you and I will cherish the memories we created together. Thank you!”
I think the answer is obviously yes. Having myself worked for several companies that filed bankruptcy I can tell you that it’s no fun. Broadcasting is full of stories about employees being offered take-it-or-leave-it pay cuts among other things.
This story seems to repeat itself every day. Layoffs, retirements, even closures. If you think it is bad in radio and TV — check out newspapers and magazines. We need MORE good reporting, spread wide, not less. As close to home as possible, wherever home is. That doesn’t seem to be the trend though.
In addition to the P-G, I’ve been subscribing to WESA InBox (free) and Public Source (donation) to add to my local newsbeats. Occasionally local TV and radio news will break a story so keeping their apps handy is a good idea too.
