No word on what exactly the upgrades will bring, but one might assume that the ATSC 3.0 might be an eventual part of this transition.
We recently got ATSC 3.0 here in Columbus which, thanks to Sinclair owning/operating three of the five major network affiliates here, is available on all of the major network stations except Tegna-owned CBS affiliate WBNS-TV. (Much like WTAE-TV back home, NBC affiliate WCMH-TV was part of the transition here, too.) The move effectively left Sinclair moving the intellectual property of one of those stations it controls but not own–Fox affiliate WTTE–onto a subchannel of Sinclair-owned-outright WSYX.
I recently bought a new TV, I had thought about getting a TV with an ATSC 3.0 tuner, but with them being at least $1500/pop, I passed for now. I DID get a 4K UHD Roku TV that has a crisper picture than my other TV’s (that one was a much more affordable $350–AND it was a Westinghouse, though unrelated to THAT Westinghouse except by name), albeit still in ATSC 1.0. Know anyone that currently gets ATSC 3.0 for WPGH-TV, WPNT, & WTAE-TV? I think they’re the only ones that currently have it back home. But if KDKA-TV is possibly making the upgrade, I just hope WPXI & WQED isn’t left behind, though I imagine the latter has other issues right now.
