Junker retiring at the end of April

Just when Tom Brady calls an end to his 40 day retirement, Guy Junker has decided to call it a career. The 65-year-old sports reporter announced today that he will retire come April 30 after 44 years that included two stints at WTAE-TV (4).

Actually, with just one exception, Junker has spent the bulk of his career here in his home town. The South Hills native, who now lives in the North Hills, started at WPQR-FM in Uniontown in 1978 earning $10.00 per high school football game he covered. The retirement date he chose allows him to cover one more Pirates opener (by the skin of his teeth it seems since baseball came close to not starting this year!) and one more NFL draft.

Junker calls his career “a dream come true” in that he grew up listening to the likes of Myron Cope and Bob Prince. “…and all of a sudden it’s ‘Myron’s on vacation and you’re filling in for him,'” he told the Post-Gazette’s Joshua Axelrod.

Other than WTAE, Junker has co-hosted programs with KDKA-TV’s Bob Pompeani and, of course Stan Savran. He’s been the host of pre- and post-game shows for the various local teams.
