Johnstown pirate operator receives notice
November 8, 2022Pat Cloonan has been reporting to PBRTV since summer about a pirate operator in the Johnstown/Indiana area on 99.9 FM. On September 8, 2022, the FCC found the pirate and served Randal Rogalski of Johnstown with a notice of illegal broadcasting.
The commission has warned they may issue a fine of $2,149,551 which would encourage the operator of the illegal station to respond with in 10 business days of the notice indicating one is no longer operating that station.
(Thanks to alert reader John.)
I think someone should come up with a plan to allow small stations on the AM broadcast band, LPAM, like we have LPFM. In most places the FM band is full, like in Pittsburgh, I don\’t think there\’s anything open near the city. LPAM has open frequencies and would work better in the area; with FM translators you need to be on the correct side of the hill to pick them up well, and there\’s choppy signals from multi-path. You can even do stereo on AM.
