It’s only temporary…
May 15, 2018Once again, the PBRTV email has been inundated with messages saying that KQV (1410) is on the air. Many are assuming that the “resumption of operations” (dated 5/15/18) is permanent, but PBRTV has learned that the move is merely temporary. A station can remain silent for up to a year after a STA is filed for “Remain Silent Authority” which one would assume will happen again soon. The closing date for the sale of the station from Calvary, Inc. to Broadcast Communications Inc. has yet to happen, but we hear it will take place soon.
As the Ross Township 5-tower site for KQV is not a part of the sale, BCI has filed to move the transmitter to be diplexed at the WEDO tower in North Versailles. 1410 is said to be able to enjoy a non-directional 5000 watt daytime signal, but just 75 watts at night from its proposed new home.
Due to the heritage of the station, this has been one of, if not the most-watched transactions in the Pittsburgh market.
Frankly, I enjoy the “old tyme” radio format — I realize that content is available on line but hearing old GUNSMOKE radio dramas with Robert Conrad as Matt Dillon is cool.
William Conrad.
I too heard KQV testing at odd times, like early morning weekends, and playing a news feed, sometimes to just go off abruptly. For a while I thought it might be a radio enthusiast sad to see KQV off air and doing a broadcast to mimic them as a tribute.
I like hearing the old radio shows too, on actual AM radio like they were originally broadcast on. Hearing them on line isn’t the same because it just can’t recreate real radio. I hope it’s the sign of things to come on the new KQV, and since I have lots of old radios it’s nice to tune them to 1410.
Since the authority to operate extends for a year after going silent, coming back on seems like a good idea to reset the clock, then you get more time to install the station in a new location.

I’m enjoying the old shows while I can. I really missed them.
