In Memory: Ted Atkins
July 19, 2012With a heavy heart, we announce that former WTAE-AM (1250) General Manager Ted Atkins has died. Mr. Atkins was surrounded in his last days by family, friends and former co-workers, all of whom shared great admiration for this man whom they all referred to as “Captain Showbiz”.
In addition to WTAE Radio, Atkins worked locally at WWSW-AM/FM; several stations in Denver, Colorado in the 1950s & 60s, Kansas City, Kansas AND Missouri. On the list of well known stations: CKLW Detroit, KHJ Los Angeles and KIIS Los Angeles. He retired in Pittsburgh with his wife Karen.
Ted Atkins talent built 1250 WTAE and WXKX 96.1 FM into two Pittsburgh powerhouses. Ted was willing to take a chance with talent and imagination to develope stations that the Pittsburgh community loved. He was a one of a kind boss, never a cross word to anyone, an infectious smile, and heart as big as anyone can imagine. He touched so many lives. Ted will always be rembered in our hearts. God Speed Ted.
