In memory: Joe Gearing
September 15, 2015Joe Gearing passed away Monday just days before his 81st birthday. Gearing was a talk show host at several stations in the area including 1130 WASP in Brownsville, WJAS (1320) before the station had it’s “13Q” years. and twice at KDKA (1020) – first from 1974-1980 and again from 1987-1990. More recently Gearing facilitated paid programs on WEDO (810 McKeesport) and WKHB (620 Irwin). In addition to his radio career, he once served as a magistrate in Westmoreland County. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
So Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr.Gearing,Prayers for his family.
I am familiar with his body of work at 1320 WJAS and KDKA but he also did a Sunday night show early on at WKTQ 13Q pin the early seventies when Heftel first changed the format to chr.
I Met Joe in 1974 he was Working at WQTW 1570, Then Later at WBCW 1530.He Worked at alot of Local stations. He Had the True “Radio Voice”. I Belive His Son Also was Working In radio.
I had the pleasure of working with Joe somewhere between 1969 to 1971 at WNUF (100.7) back during its Big Band music days. I remember Joe also doing weekends at the original WZUM playing top 40.
Joe was a great person and did it all.. talk, music ect and always had a good comment or two..
Joe was not an announcer he talked to you as they say at the coffee table. As Tony Graham once a PD
at KDKA RADIO,told me”we want people who don’t sound like an announcer..
The Best to the Family
