In memory: Beano Cook
October 11, 2012Local radio announcers and the college football community are mourning the loss of Carroll H. “Beano” Cook this afternoon. Cook passed away Wednesday night after a brief illness at age 81. He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he later became Sports Information Director. Cook was a frequent sports commentator on WTAE-TV in the 1980s as well as appearances on local radio. More recently he was a commentator on ESPN.
Born in Boston in 1931, Cook’s family moved to Pittsburgh when he was 7. A new neighbor started calling him “Beano” in reference to “Beantown”, Boston’s nickname.
