In Memoriam: P.J. Maloney

August 17, 2024 Off By Eric O'Brien

We are sad to report this morning that former KQV (1410) morning announcer P.J. Maloney has died. Maloney worked at KQV during much of its all-news format over two different stints. The longest and most recent stint ending when the Dickey family shut down operations at the end of 2018. They then sold the license and equipment to Broadcast Communications, Inc. at which point he retired.

Maloney also worked at Channel 11 in the early 1980s as a reporter and as a weather man. He’s also known for his work at Channel 16 when it was non-comm WQEX. There he would introduce programming throughout the day (along with the likes of Joe Negri and Pip Theodore) – a style that wasn’t unlike “MTV” or the early days of “fX”.

Mr. Maloney was a Marquette University graduate and prior to the first stint at KQV, worked in the newspaper industry as editor for Dardinell Publications who published regional papers.

He is remembered for his love of Pirates baseball, including making trips to spring training. He is also known for having ridden his bicycle anytime he could! Maloney had been battling a lengthy illness at the time of his death early this morning.

We were pleased to have P.J. on the PBRTV Podcast in 2019 and have re-posted it here in tribute.
