Hark! What IS that I hear?
December 19, 2019KQV (1410) is back on the air as of today from its new transmission site in North Versailles – diplexed with WEDO (810). For the time being it will simulcast the easy listening programming from sister station WKGO (88.1 Murrysville.
Godspeed and good luck to Bob and Ashley.
It’s always good to hear that nostalgia from yesteryear is making a comeback. If only someone would start making replica Atwater Kent receivers to listen to the station. There are a number of old record player enthusiasts out there with old wax cylinder and 78 rpm disc players and media. Maye they could be talked into doing an “Imaginary Ballroom” program of authentic music from the early days of W8ZAE. Cloud makes a nice replica of an RCA 44 microphone.

Congratulations! I’m glad to see the institution back! Glad they made it, and the sound of the Beautiful Music format makes me remember my mom listening to it, and talking about WLOA, one of the first stations with the format, hearing that on her radio at the apartment in Bellvue, which must have been the late 1960s.
I get good reception of the daytime signal, I’d call it strong/distant, doesn’t sound like it’s in my back yard, but it still has some muscle. The sound is clean and with good lows and highs, and not overdoing the processing and that’s good to my ears and for the format. Here’s an aircheck from saturday morning.

That’s on an antenna indoors, it would be better with a loop outside.

What will be the coming format?
I think you’re right George, and AM could be a place for nostalgia, and something new and different too, I’d like to hear that. This format should be good for old time radio fans, where you don’t want music that sounds too contemporary coming through the speakers. We used to have 1320 WJAS for that.
Here’s how I get KQV during the day on my stereo (no, the stereo light doesn’t come on for them). Here’s hoping the engineers at KQV can activate AM stereo, I have several radios that can pick up stereo stations.
It’s an aircheck to show how reception was in Greentree PA so you and other readers can get an idea of how KQV’s new signal sounds here. Unique programming, I’ll give it that, and you should be proud. I shared it with someone from Montreal who also misses this kind of station.

It’s good by day, and at night there’s jamming by other stations, but I can still hear it. Very nice Eric and the rest of the team, and merry Christmas to you and the rest!

Glad to hear KQV back on the air. Are you using the transmitter from the old site in the North Hills or was a new transmitter purchased? Wishing you every success as you bring back to life one of the area’s oldest radio stations.
Great to have 1410 back on the air with some much needed EASY LISTENING…hope to hear good things in 2020. Coming in loud and clear in Munhall.
In all honesty I have never been a big fan of this format. But I have listened quite a bit since KQV returned to the airwaves, and I must admit Eric that you’ve have done a really nice job of programming it. I especially like how you have worked in some tracks that were hits as instrumentals originally (Classical Gas, Love is Blue, etc.) along with instrumental covers of songs. I am surprised by how many TV theme tunes are in the mix. Listening does bring back warm memories of my grandparents who were devoted WKJF listeners back in the day.
The format evolved toward the end of its run to be what I am trying to convey in the hours of music that are programmed there.
