Channel Repack
April 14, 2017Remember when WQED announced the sale of its channel spectrum for $9.9 million? Now the complete list of channel changes have been released. This is the digital over the air signal which will never appear any different as, of course, channels identify themselves by their analog signals that went off the air in 2009.
RabbitEars.info has the list for Pittsburgh here. KDKA-TV will not be moving from its DT signal at 25, nor will sister WPCW be moving from 11. While WQED will move from its analog/digital signal at 13 to channel 2, former sister and WINP will move from digital 38 to 16 where its DT signal will match its analog ID. “Confused? You won’t be after this episode of Soap!”
Surrounding markets:
This is so strange. So after not one, but two channel repacks and moving to ATSC 3.0, the channels will be able to keep their virtual channel numbers from when analog was shutdown in 2009? Why even bother with channel numbers anymore if they\’re not even being used? WQED on RF channel 2? KDKA should just call themselves channel 25 from now on. I know, too much confusion, right? In fact, why should terrestrial TV be allowed to exist? I believe the highest channel in ATSC 3.0 is 36 or 37? Just knock it all off and sell it to Verizon or T-Mobile. This is getting ridiculous!
Sorry to see that WEPA will be going dark. I enjoy the Movies! channel they run on their .2 subchannel.
I’m not sure that it will go dark. A few of its repeaters will be getting a new channel so I bet the main signal will piggy-back on another channel.
Any idea on when this is going to happen?
I believe it’s due to happen within the next couple years.
