Ceci Sommers dies
February 2, 2021The matriarch of WQED-FM (89.3) passed away this morning. Ceci Sommers and her husband, Jack, arrived in Pittsburgh from Chicago in the early-1970s where they had been a part of Classical WTTM. There were doubts that Pittsburgh would support a classical station, but 48 years later, Jack & Ceci’s efforts are still going strong at 89.3.
Sommers was at the station for over 20 years as the Vice-president and station manager and community relations. But she frequented the station pledge drives even after retirement.
Morning host, Jim Cunningham will have a radio tribute to Ceci on Thursday, February 4 at 8:00 a.m.
There’s an example of a solid radio station, quietly doing its thing for years and years at a high technical standard, and pleasing its listeners.
Thank you to Ceci and her husband.
I will be forever grateful to Ceci and Jack for bringing WQED-FM to life. It’s been a wonderful friend to me over the years. Listening to Jim’s tribute now and being reminded of all of the phenomenal programs 89.3 had over the years. How wonderful it would be for members in the community to rediscover this gem of a radio station or for people to discover for the first time.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Ceci’s family and friends and to the entire QED-FM staff, past and present.
