Broadcaster tidbits

PBRTV has learned of news of local broadcasters who have gone elsewhere.

  • On a sad note, we mark the death of Arthur C. Greenwald who died of end stage renal failure last week at age 68. Mr. Greenwald, a Squirrel Hill native, is perhaps best known as the creative director and executive producer of programs like “Evening Magazine,” a staple of the stations owned by Westinghouse (and syndicated to others as “PM Magazine”. Greenwald is also remembered for some over the top promos like the “world’s longest chorus line” featured for Evening Magazine on KDKA-TV in the mid-1980s. Glenn Przyborski Productions filmed and edited.
Arthur C. Greenwald was the creator of this Evening Magazine promo in the mid-1980s featuring the late Don Brocket and program hosts Jon Burnett and Liz Miles. Mr. Greenwald, who posted this to his own YouTube account, died last week in California.

The Post-Gazette has a marvelous tribute to Mr. Greenwald featuring comments from Przyborski, Jon Burnett and Aviva Radbord.

Former WTAE Meteorologist Don Schwenneker, who left the station at the end of 2007 for a gig in Chicago, is finally getting the dream gig we thought he was due many years ago. Schwenneker has been at WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham, NC since 2011. At the end of May, he will take over the chief meteorologist spot as the current chief retires after 30 years in the position.

As Schwenneker moves to the evenings, a native-Pittsburgher moves into the morning meteorologist position. Kweilyn Murphy, who spent some time behind the scenes locally at WQED and KDKA-TV, will move to North Carolina from New Orleans where she has spent 8 years at WDSU. If memory serves, Murphy’s short time a WQED was an opportunity to work with Kweilyn Nassar – the lady whose first name Murphy’s mom liked so much … and the rest is history!
