A little self-promotion never hurts…
December 4, 2023Yet a little goes a long way…
I was pleased to join my friend and colleague Jason Togyer on his public affairs program Two Rivers, 30 Minutes which airs on Tube City Online Radio, WZUM (1550 Braddock) and WEDO (810 McKeesport).
Just listening now, Eric. Back in 1977 I drove from Rochester to Pittsburgh for my (then) “dream job” at 13Q (WKTQ). That was some kinda trip. At the interchange between I-90 and I-79 I heard “Also Sprach Zarathustra” on CJBC (860) from Toronto, blasting across Lake Erie. Little did I know that Pittsburgh would be one (or two) of the shining moments in my career. I just listened to your interview and thought it fascinating. Like you, I grew up in the shadow of those flashing beacons that adorned radio towers and was fascinated at how it all happened. Life gets a little (or a lot) more complicated as we get older, but we can’t forget how it all worked back in the day. Names like Don Cox, Jim Quinn, Jack Bogut, O’Brien and Garry, Bill Hillgrove, Myron Cope, Jack Fleming, Joe DiNardo, Ted Atkins, Keith Abrams, Kerry Griffith, Ray Zoller, Don Bombard, Rick Starr..I could go on and on – but in the 4 years (total) that I spent in PGH, the incredible people involved in radio were amazing. Thanks for the hard work that you put into your website and congratulations on a quarter century of service to those of us who love the business. Always did and always will. Sincere good wishes on your efforts to live with Parkinson’s and if there’s such a thing as “cosmic strength”, we’re all passing it on to you. By the way, as a side note, in 1983 I was in the process of moving from Buffalo (WGR) to Cincinnati (WKRC) and in the midst of the move I started hearing from management at KDKA looking for a PD. I might be one of the few to ever turn down that job. Between flights (on USAir that connected in Pittsburgh) and trying to run my former station-and get acquainted with the newer one I had a large decision to make. KDKA would have been a great station to put on my resume-or even retire from, but as we’ve found out these many years later retiring from any media outlet would be difficult, if not impossible. Best of luck for 25 more years- and we’ll look for more fun from your website.
Thank you for the very kind words and for sharing your stories. This is why I do this.
It works, Eric. Some day I’ll tell you about the time the on-air monitor crapped out at 13Q- and I thought the transmitter was off the air. (file under “red-faced moments”).
