Here are some cool photos of old ads for Pittsburgh area radio and TV stations......

WIIC-TV Channel 11

WWSW was on both AM and FM before changing to WPEZ on FM and WTKN on AM...and returning back to WWSW-AM & FM!

This construction worker must have enjoyed many a 'TAE break!

You don't suppose KDKA was first do you? Remember however that KDKA-2 was initially WDTV-3!

"The Go-Go Team of the Fun-lovin Five was on Fun Lovin KQV - Audio 14"!

The KDKA Team around 1969. From Top to bottom, left to Right: Jack Bogut, Art Pallan, Terry McGovern, Ed and Wendy King, Clark Race, Jim Horne (w/then wife)

This is the WQED tower with the "fork design" located behind where Pitt Stadium used to be. The photo shows the "side-mounted" antenna on the lower left that was the station's original antenna from 1973 until early 2001. Up near the top is the station's new antenna which surrounds the entire tower. Because of this new design, neighborhoods west of the city pick up the signal with little to no interferance from the tower. The old "side-mount" on the eastern side of the tower had a lot of problems with interferance from the tower.

Speaking of the WQED tower, here is Warren Andrews in the WQED-FM emergency studio. A construction crew sliced through the fiberoptic line linking the Fifth Avenue studios and the transmitter. Engineer Dave Tepe hastily assembled the makeshift studio in the transmitter building next to the VA hospital in Oakland. Surprisingly enough, it sounded quite good. (note: cigar smoking permitted per transmitter engineer Chris Hood)

Ah. Now this takes one back. This PATransit trolley was all decked out to help you relax on your commute home. WPNT-FM, The ORIGINAL Point used to play beautiful music on 92.9. I figure this picture is from the early 80's just before trolleys and WPNT left the streets of Pittsburgh. The picture is on the South Side near the Smithfield Street Bridge.

WJJJ's Mike Kirven. Mike has been on many stations in town, including stops at WSHH and WLTJ. But some of his more noted stops have been WYDD in the 70's and again in the 80's, WNRJ - late 80's, WXRB - early 90's, WJJJ - late 90's with Smooth Jazz and WJJJ again with Jammin' Hits. Why does that seem odd? WYDD, WNRJ, WXRB and WJJJ have all had a home on 104.7 FM!
