Baughman also on WJAS; Shovlin shifts attention to Promotions

Pittsburgh:

Alert reader Joe asked us as to the whereabouts of Chris Shovlin - and near as we could tell he hasn't gone far. But a check to the WJAS Website shows that Chris Shovlin is no longer a part of the Bogut in the Morning Show. Instead, Hank Baughman is now the regular newsman. A quick observation to all three Renda station websites - including 'JAS shows that Chris still holds the position of Director of Marketing and Promotions.  PBRTV later found out from a reliable source that Shovlin's promotions assistant recently moved on and the position has not been filled due to budget concerns leaving Shovlin to focus his attention on that. He is also the voice for various Robert Morris University sporting events as well as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. He has been with Renda Broadcasting for over a decade.

Baughman has been with Renda Broadcasting and WSHH since the mid-1980s when the station was Pittsburgh's key beautiful music station.

If I’m not mistaken, Chris Shovlin continues to do play-by-play for Robert Morris basketball. So they might be putting Baughman on during these next 2 months for the sake of consistency.

I heard there was serious talk at Renda about re-teaming Jack Bogut and Dave James after James retired from KDKA. What became of that?

Bill, I would imagine it’s all due to budgets and such.

The subject of a Bogut-James reunion was mentioned in passing when I talked to Renda management about part-time work three years ago, but because Jack already had a team in place, I didn’t want to displace anyone. I was tired of news and wanted to go back to being a jock, which I was good at back in the 50’s and 60’s. We shook hands on a plan to have me work at all three Renda stations, pending Tony Jr.‘s approval, but, as Eric mentioned, budgetary considerations ended the deal.

Sad to say, I think this is all about cutting an on-air salary. Times are tough for WJAS and they need to save where they can. Hank works AM and FM (sounds like the AM content is on tape) and Carol stays as Bogut’s sidekick.
