Budget cuts at Citadel Erie

Erie-Meadville: We received news yesterday that Citadel was swinging the "Budget Axe" on Robison road and getting rid of some very talented people. They include Classy 100 afternoon jock (and one time Jet FM 102 Millionaire) "Tony J", Country 98 morning co-host Laurie who won her on air job with the "Sidekick Showdown" contest a few months back. Co-host "Truckin' Tom" will be moving back to afternoons possibly next week when Country 98 picks up a syndicated morning show. Also, the newest addition to Country 98 "Johnny Marx" is also being let go a few months after being let go from rival crosstown Connoisseur country station "93.9 The Wolf."

So that’s why I did not hear “Tony Jay” on Classy 100 since last week. Ron Arlen is now on the air from 12 to 7 PM as a result of this move. It sounds like Erie radio is only getting worse.

Now it seems that 93-9 The Wolf may be able to pull ahead of Country 98 soon with these changes. Both stations have been fighting a long battle. We’ll have to wait and see who wins.

Does anyone know what Dave Benson, formerly of Classy 100’s “The Breakfast Club,” is doing now? He sounded great with Chuck and Brenda in the morning.

I’m not a fan of Erie radio’s morning shows. 93-9 The Wolf seems like it is headed in the right direction, but it still could be better. How about a partner for Aimee Clemson? When she first started at the station, Chuck the Promo Guy was on the air with her in the morning. They sounded pretty good together.

Thoughts anyone?

Yeah, as if a radio veteran (me) thought it was next to impossible for Erie radio to get worse, leave it to their, ahem, braintrust, to prove it wrong.

A city that once avoid a sports presence as if it were the plague now has two sports stations, one at the expense of a very popular Music of Your Life station that was a perfect fit with the community’s adult population.

Heck, whenever I drive into Erie to see the SeaWolves and Otters games, I find myself so unable to find an Erie station (AM or FM) worth listening to I just keep the dial on Toronto’s AM 740.

Erie radio was bad enough when I worked in the fringe areas (Corry, Saegertown, Oil City). It just keeps getting worse and worse.
