WTAE - Now in HD
Pittsburgh:WTAE-TV (4) began its new HD broadcasts with the 12:00 Noon broadcast today - 50 years and 1 day after the station first signed on. New graphics are a part of the deal, but the -Hearst theme music remains and the year-old set, made specifically for HD, really shines. WTAE is the second Pittsburgh station to go HD, WPXI-TV (11) went HD a year ago after their move to the new location. This leaves KDKA-TV (2) as the only one of the "Big 3" to convert. Their conversion is expected in early 2009.

I was certain the station would get a new theme, like Gari’s “Eyewitness News” package, which is made for ABC affiliates nationwide. I’m hoping that when KDKA does go HD, they get Frank Gari’s “CBS Enforcer Collection.” It wouldn’t be their first Gari package because in the 90s they used “Advantage” by Gari, which is still used at WSEE in Erie.

Highly unlikely. As I mentioned, WTAE is a Hearst-Argyle station. For the last several years H-A stations have been using the same theme tailored to whatever their slogan is. Probably a great cost-saving deal for Hearst and pretty nifty if you ask me.

You’re right about WTAE’s using for the Hearst theme. It’s awesome and done by the Newsmusic Central “orchestra,” if you will. The current theme is “Where The News Comes First,” which was used three years ago when Bill Ratner became the voice of ‘TAE.
