Hey Beacon! There is often dead air on 940
Misc. Pennsylvania: Several times I have tuned into WGRP "Classic Country 940" from Greenville and often find the "sounds of silence" on that station. Obviously, the station is getting most of it's programming from satellite, other than a local host by the name of "Johnny Rogers" who works there middays taking requests. There have been maybe 7 or 8 times when I found the station with dead air, including today (September 2nd). The station and a few others including Christian rock/rap hybrid WEXC 107.1 "Freq 107" (Also in Greenville) is owned by Harold Glunt's "Beacon Broadcasting." Usually, a station has an alarm for such quiet periods which alerts someone that there is no programming on a station. It's like the AM station is neglected while Beacon puts more of their resources into the "Freq", which has yet to show up in the Youngstown ratings despite efforts to be a Youngstown station. If work is being done to the station, at least let the public know in the local paper and on your website. Clearly, a lot of people do not listen to AM for music anymore but there is still an audience out there that would like a country station that differs from what most of the FM country stations play. Or another option would be to replace the Freq with classic country on FM. The Youngstown market might notice 107.1 in the next book.Readers’ Forum
Wow! Someone listens to WGRP! I wasn’t sure if anyone was listening to it. Is the station’s studios in Greenville or are they located else where? WEXC and WGRP would be a great pair of stations for an owner who was serious about doing local radio to have. By the way I noticed tonight that WRBP in Youngstown is playing “Slow Jams” all the imaging has changed too. This must have just happened I had them on last week and their imaging said they are playing all the jams. The play list sounded like they are heading in a different direction.

I think that the studios for all the Beacon Broadcasting radio stations are located in Warren, Ohio.
WEXC should try a different format. How about adult contemporary or variety hits (BOB, JACK, SAM, ...)?

I think a few people listen to WGRP. I was hoping that Joe Vilkie would have been able to get 940 but that deal fell through. Another idea for WEXC would be to rebroadcast WBBG 106.1 with their weak signal outside of Youngstown. Variety hits has not been tried in Youngstown yet, so that would be another possibility. I’ll have to check out WRBP to see if they are toning down the younger skewing songs that can be heard on WAMO 106.7 and WENZ 107.9.

The Beacon Broadcasting radio stations have a lot of potential. However, I don’t think that they are doing enough to make their stations competitors with everyone else.
Stations owned by Beacon Broadcasting:
WEXC 107.1 – Greenville, PA – Christian Rock/Rap
WGRP 940 – Greenville, PA – Classic Country
WANR 1570 – Warren, OH – Classic Hits
WLOA 1470 – Farrell, PA – Sporting News Radio
WRTK 1540 – Niles, OH – Black Gospel – Daytime Only

I have to agree with you Doug. There is potential with having 5 signals and promotion is the key to the success of any station. Connecting with the communities they serve is key. A lot of out of town station owners / consultants forget that and just plug in what they want without any input from the communities they serve. Beacon needs to do this against the giants that rule most of the airwaves in both the Shenango and Mahoning Valley

Does anyone know whether any of the four Beacon Broadcasting AM radio stations broadcast in AM stereo?
Doug - September 06, 2008 at 1:13 pm
No, none of the Beacon AM stations broadcast in Stereo. WYNE 1530 in North East, WKHB 620 near Pittsburgh and CFCO 630 in Chatham, Ontario are the only 3 that broadcast in AM Stereo that I can get in my area.

Since Beacon Broadcasting owns 4 AM radio stations and the quality of AM audio is inferior when compared to FM audio, they could improve the stations if Glunt is willing to invest in AM Stereo and promote it.
I would really like to see Beacon Broadcasting and its five radio stations become successful. Hopefully, someone can make them competitors with the other local radio stations.
By the way, if anyone is interested in reading more about Beacon Broadcasting, you can check out the following link.
