Hoerth fans now have a place to write "Uncle Dougie"

Pittsburgh:

If you are a forlorn Doug Hoerth fan, here’s some hope! We received this email today at PBRTV.

As most of you know, my good friend and colleague Doug "Uncle Dougie" Hoerth is moving beyond his work at a select radio station in Pittsburgh. Nooooo, he's not become "a retired investor living on a pension", and he's not been dying of the same heart attack for 30 years...although living in Pittsburgh can at times be the symbolic equivalent. Doug is well, under the circumstances (a far cry from being under the train), and I myself have been in touch with him...and he's asked me to stop touching him. I can't get into details, but "I do remember, he was laughing". All joking aside, fans of Doug and his show who wish to send regards via email may do so by sending to me, Laurence Gaines, at lpgainesjr@yahoo.com. I will then forward the emails to Doug. I know that he appreciates his fans, and their expressions of concern, regret...and unprecedented fear. I would never aim to speak for Doug, but I do believe he'd say to you, were he here: "I love you with all-a my heart, if I don't see-a you again soon, I'm-a gonna die." --Laurence Gaines, Doug's former producer, baker, and deputy sheriff.

UPDATE, Feb. 8, 2008: Hi, folks. Please read the message again. You have to send your emails to Laurence at lpgainesjr@yahoo.com. PBRTV is not affiliated with any radio station, or with Doug Hoerth. Thanks for understanding. Comments on this entry are now closed.

First, and foremost, I wish you the very best in all that you do andI’m sure you WILL find something much better. I hope you will resurface somewhere else on Pittsburgh radio, but if not thank you so much for the millions of laughs, the interesting and humerous stories and some of the best interviews on radio.

Doug,
I hope this will be a great New Year for you. I’m sad and your listeners are sad that you are gone, not fair. Nothing will ever compare to the music, the stories that you told and the laughs you shared with us. Hope you are on to something better and somewhere that we can hear you again.

Dear Doug,
This is the Letter to the Editor that I sent to the Tribune Review…

I can’t tell you how disappointed I was to find out that Doug Hoerth was off the radio. Doug was the
one talk show host in Pittsburgh who offered truly original entertainment. His show was hip,
unpredictable, and most importantly…fun. While most talk show hosts focus on what is right and
wrong in the world, Uncle Dougy reminded us all daily not to take life too seriously. Sure…there
were times when he seemed tired, impatient and downright rude but he also had passion and wasn’t
afraid to cry. What a gift it was to have such a brilliant talent in our small town. I’m sure they’ll have no problem filling his spot, but as for replacing Doug Hoerth?...Forgetaboutit.
Good Pittsburgh radio sleeps with the fishes.

Doug:
I was shocked and saddened that you are not on the air in Pittsburgh. It was the highlight of my day to hear you in my office and on the way home. Your show and Lynn Cullen’s were the two programs on WPTT that I enjoy so much. They made me think and made made me happy in the workday. I wish you good luck in all you do, and hope that you surface in Pittsburgh. Let us know where ever you will be. You know your faithfull fans will follow you anywhere.

I have listened to Doug for many years and was extremely sad to find that he was no longer on WPTT. What the hell is that trash they are replacing him with? Wptt has to be crazy to let such a talent as Doug get away. First of all they were extremely fortunate to have such a talent on a radio station that puts out less watts than my CB radio. When the station cut back power in the later portion of Doug’s show,I still would listen even though I only heard every other word. You need to rethink your decision!! Unbelieveable!!!!!!!!!!

What is going on?
Were is Doug? I wrote the station to find out what has happened to Doug Hoerth,I did not get any respose at all?
Have they removed him from the 3 to 6 spot, and put him at a different time, but they did not say?
Doug was the only talk show that I enjoy lisoning to,he is so informative, and his intervews were the best.
I will follow him on what ever station re-signs him, he is the best, maybe it’s time for TV?

Dear Uncle Dougie – I’ve followed you and your show from station to station, and time slot to time slot. You are irrepressible and not replaceable. I will miss your interviews, your rants, and your humor.
I know it’s a small rebellion, but WPTT is no longer on my dial. There are too many other stations.

Dear Doug,

I find it hard to express just how much my family and I miss you, your daily show and the oldies show. You are a true talent, entertaining and your interviews were super. My daughter will be going away to college this fall, she told me that she is really going to miss the 1st song you ended your show with, the G. Marx song…She had in memorized. Miss you, you made me laugh and think.

I have been a loyal listener to Uncle Dougie since he started many moons ago on the 50,000 watt clear channel station following him all the way to WPTT and the Sunday night oldies program. Doug is a breath of fresh air on Pittsburgh AM talk radio that I will miss until some station realizes the size of his audience and brings him back to the airwaves sooner than later. I miss his humor, trivia, some political views, his great way of telling a story and that laugh. Keep your chin up and perhaps we will hear you again on the old AM radio making us laugh through all the damn static….

I was a HUGE fan of Uncle Douggie! His show was refreshingly original – completely different from the political vitriol or the junior-high humor on the radio today.

The sad thing is I think that Renda is killing WPTT, and he’s just waiting for Lynn’s contract to expire so he can just pull the plug on the station.

With KDKA going back to “local flavor” in their broadcasts, I’m surprised that they don’t approach Uncle Douggie to do a program.

I am also missing Doug and his montly visits with Laurence…Elaine…not so much. I am hoping he lands someplace else in Pittsburgh because he is one heck of an interviewer.

Where are you Doug!
Sadly missed.

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of people that still miss Doug Hoerth on the radio every single day.

Doug, if you see this, please know how important your “little” show was to alot of us. Sure, you made me mad at least once a day (maybe once an hour) but I always came back because I knew that there’d be another nugget of insight, another (maybe corny) joke that would lighten a previously crappy day, or a reflection on personal demons that could instantly put my own battles in perspective.

I was just a kid when you came to town in the early 80s but I remember so clearly overnights that you did way back when and remember that hip young bearded guy that could hold his own and stand shoulders above most in a market filled (back then) with talent. (okay, so I was a weird kid who’s idols were Cigna (at night, not the emasculated morning Cigna), Marshall, Fox and Bogut)

And it was absolute radio magic back in those Jerry to Lynn to Doug years (at the station that is no longer listened to in my house or car) and I cherish those memories, especially the memory of how you three held it together for the rest of us to cover the events of the most horrible day of many of our lives. Six and a half years later I’m still welling-up as I think of how important you three were that day it and I just want to thank you for that and for all of the years before and since for your service.

I haven’t called a radio show since the week before that day but I always figured that at some point I would again and would have a chance to tell you “Thanks” in person.

Till thenm tell me where to send the monthly subscription fee for an Internet broadcast and I’m there and I’ll be calling in.

Patiently waiting to hear “Hello, hello” followed three hours later by “...but I’ll be back. Just look for me and you’ll see that I’ll be back. Well like my mama and pop, yes, and I’m gonna bring a cop….”

My radio at work does not pick up any AM stations, so when I knew I’d be home for 6 weeks following surgery, I was very much looking forward to recovering while getting caught up with “Uncle Dougie.” OH, I cannot tell you how disappointed I was to not find him on the air at WPTT.

I want him back on the air ASAP... I’d even be willing to invest in XM/Cirius if need be. He is a voice that must be heard. Pittsburgh is not the same without him!
