Ellis Cannon out at 104.7

Pittsburgh:

Ellis Cannon has been "removed" from the airwaves of WPGB-FM (104.7) as of yesterday and replaced with more political talk. Cannon hosted the only sports program on the station from 6:00 - 8:00 each evening, but that ended last Friday. Instead, Michael Savage has been moved to the 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. slot followed by the new "Lost Hour of Glenn Beck".

Cannon is a former trial lawyer and a Midland (Beaver County) native who left his Downtown firm in 1996 to start a local sports publication company. He continues to publish "Pittsburgh Sports Report" and "KidSports Magazine". Two years after starting the publications he started a show on WEAE-AM (1250) moving to 104.7 when the station went News Talk in January 2004.

According to Chuck Finder in the Post-Gazette, the program was considered an Arbitron success by the station's owner, Clear Channel. He suggests that it may have been part of the reason why the company hired Mark Madden for afternoons at sister station WXDX (105.9).

Ellis Cannon is being replaced by a hate-mongerer who appeals to knuckleheads. And the worst thing this whole situation is Mark Madden is also a hate-mongerer who appeals to knuckleheads.

Rege Cordic and Art Pallan are probably rolling over in their graves over this.

Bring Ellis back!!! My drive home from work can’t have 104.7 on without Ellis. Your making a big mistake.

Cordic and Pallan probably would have more reason to do so if all this was happening at KDKA. As it is happening at what seems to be less and less of a worthy rival for KDKA, certainly in 1020’s golden days but surely today, too, perhaps they may look upon it with disapproval but maybe not much else.
Incidentally, not a bad analogy between Madden and Savage.

I hate to see Ellis go, but honestly, he didn’t fit into the schedule at WPBG, as the only person on the air with all his synapses firing. Savage and the “Lost” Glen Beck…whatever the heck that is, are a much better fit at 104.7.

Ah, the intelligent, capable Mr. Cannon is out for more syndicated programming. Wonderful.

How is it that WPGB is the Pirates’ flagship, but now doesn’t have a strong sports broadcasting presence? Rocco DeMaro is good, but a FLAGSHIP should have a team of people. Or at least two.

The hard fact is, there are less and less broadcasting opportunities in Pittsburgh. That would make radio legends spin in their grave more than controversial subject matter.

Once again Clear Channel shows its stupidity. They hired the arrogant, ignorant, pompous, asisine one after he was FINALLY fired from ESPN. They let Ellis Cannon go, a thoughtful, insightful KNOWLEGIBLE talk show host, who always had a dialogue with his callers. If this is the “future of talk radio” I want no part of it!

To be honest, 104.7 is a frequency that I avoid at almost all costs. That said, Ellis was a breath of fresh air and as a previous poster said, a knowledgable talk show host able to carry on a conversation with callers. Too bad for us that he’s off the air. As for “The Lost Glenn Beck”, isn’t that a statement of fact and not a show title??

Ellis is very entertaining, knowledgable and always respectful to his callers. He’s like Stan Savran on speed with a squeaky voice. I love the show. He has too big a local audience to disappear. He’ll show up somewhere else before the start of baseball season.
Poor Digby. When he says “This is Digby for the National Weather Service he sounds like he’s disgusted that he’s doing the weather. I hope that E rescues him when he starts a new show.

Is there a new Sports Radio Station coming to the PGH market? Tim Benz made a comment about this on the 19th.

104.7’s removal of Eliis Cannon HAS to do with POLITICS. This conservative radio station is sacrificing Ellis to dedicate more air-time for more political liberal-bashing for the upcoming 2010 Congressional election. Ellis’ show was in the way. WPGB doesn’t care about sports or it’s ratings. It’s on a misison! “Let’s get those liberals OUT!” Ellis, they did you a favor. You are too good of a profession and person to be lodged between Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. For a guy like you, much better things lie ahead…..just hope that you don’t have to leave Pittsburgh for that to happen. Best Wishes “E!”

I was so disappointed not to find Ellis on the radio the other day now to find out he’s been fired???? No wonder why terrestrial radio is dieing … they continually kill good talent! Thank God I still have my trusty Sirius radio to tune on to fill the void :(

Hey Ellis, take your time and find a good station, not one that caters to the insanity of Michael Savage. I must have tried 10 times in the past week to pull up your show. All the best to you. 104.7 is history on my radio dial.
