Rep. Doyle calls for more LPFMs

Pittsburgh, National News: US Representative Mike Doyle (D - Forest Hills) introduced a bill today to hopefully increase the number of Low-power FM stations across the country. According to the Post-Gazette, if passed, the new bill would relax a restriction that new stations occupy frequencies four intervals away from existing full-power stations. Doyle cited a 2003 study which shows that three intervals is plenty of space to prevent signal interferance. He says that there is the potential to "revolutionize what Americans hear on their radios" and claiming there isn't enough FM broadcast space in the Pittsburgh market. Doyle is co-sponsoring the bill with Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb). (No...it's not Terry Lee in disguise!) A similar bill was introduced in the senate.

The spirit in which this was offered is appreciated but the reality of this proposal is that it’ll never fly. The NAB, the ComCo’s and the big bucks that follow will see to it that this thing never gets past its initial steps. We all should know who’s in charge of this country and if you answered you and me… UGHHH WRONG! It’s the Golden Rule guys, those with the gold absolutely rules. Instead of proposing this “token offering” with expanded LPFMs which if by some miracle did pass, is going to bring on one incredible administrative mess, it would have been nice if Rep. Doyle proposed legislation that would roll back parts of the 1996 TeleCom Act that permitted the spectrum hogs like Clear Channel and CBS to own virtually as many stations as they like. It’d be kind of neat to see the old 8-8-8 rule put back into effect.

More LPFM’s? Urg. The reality of the great majority of these is that they are never powerful enough to be heard, but operate with just enough wattage to block other signals. 95.9 here in Erie has an LPFM nullifying reception of CFPL out of London. The FM band is overcrowded as it is.
